Helping Hampshire businesses get Cyber Essentials ready since 2005

Cyber Essentials is often presented as a simple questionnaire.

In reality, the businesses we speak to are usually dealing with practical challenges.

Sometimes it’s unsupported equipment. Sometimes it’s Microsoft 365 settings that have evolved over time. Sometimes nobody is completely certain what’s actually in scope.

That’s where we help.

We’re based in Waterlooville and support organisations across Hampshire, helping them understand the requirements, fix the issues that matter and complete the process with confidence. We hold Cyber Essentials certification ourselves, so we know first-hand what the process involves. Find out more about Westlake IT.

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a UK Government-backed cyber security certification designed to help organisations protect themselves against the most common internet-based threats.

It’s built around five technical controls covering:

  • Firewalls
  • Secure configuration
  • Security updates
  • User access controls
  • Malware protection

Certification doesn’t guarantee protection against every possible threat.

What it does provide is a recognised security baseline and evidence that sensible safeguards are in place. The NCSC publishes the full requirements if you want to read them.

For many organisations, that’s exactly what customers, suppliers, insurers and procurement teams want to see.

Why Hampshire businesses need Cyber Essentials

Most organisations don’t wake up one morning wanting Cyber Essentials.

They need it because:

  • A major customer requests it
  • A tender requires it
  • An insurer asks security questions
  • A supply chain partner expects it
  • Leadership wants reassurance that the basics are being handled properly

Cyber Essentials provides a recognised framework and gives external organisations confidence that your business takes security seriously.

For some businesses it’s a competitive advantage. For others it’s simply becoming the cost of entry.

Either way, the challenge is normally not completing the questionnaire. The challenge is knowing whether your environment actually meets the requirements.

Cyber Essentials and Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 often plays a significant role in Cyber Essentials readiness.

We regularly find organisations already own many of the tools they need but the configuration isn’t consistent, the environment has evolved over time or nobody is completely sure which settings matter.

We’ll help identify what’s genuinely important, what isn’t and where improvements are required.

Areas we commonly review include:

  • Multi-factor authentication
  • Administrator account security
  • Conditional Access
  • Device management
  • Software updates
  • Remote access
  • Cloud service configuration

The objective isn’t to add complexity. The objective is to ensure your environment meets the requirements in a sensible and manageable way.

Common reasons certification gets delayed

Most delays aren’t caused by major security failures.

They’re normally caused by overlooked details, legacy systems or assumptions that don’t match reality.

Common examples include:

  • Unsupported operating systems
  • Legacy network hardware
  • Missing software updates
  • Inconsistent MFA deployment
  • Shared administrator accounts
  • Unmanaged devices
  • Incomplete asset awareness
  • Cloud services that have been overlooked

The good news is that most of these issues are fixable once they’re identified.

Finding them before assessment is far easier than discovering them halfway through the process.

How much does Cyber Essentials cost?

Every organisation is different.

The overall cost depends on:

  • The size of the organisation
  • The number of users and devices
  • Whether remediation work is required
  • Existing Microsoft 365 licensing
  • Whether Cyber Essentials Plus is required

Rather than publishing arbitrary package prices, we start with a conversation and provide advice based on your environment.

That way you’re only paying for what’s genuinely required.

Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus?

For many organisations, Cyber Essentials is sufficient.

Others require Cyber Essentials Plus because a customer, contract or procurement process demands greater assurance.

Cyber Essentials

  • Verified self-assessment
  • Suitable for many organisations
  • Demonstrates recognised baseline controls

Cyber Essentials Plus

  • Includes independent technical testing
  • Higher level of assurance
  • Often required for specific contracts

We’ll help determine which option is appropriate before any work begins.

Not sure where to start?

If you’re considering Cyber Essentials but aren’t certain what work is involved, start with a conversation.

We’ll help you understand:

  • What is likely to be in scope
  • Whether your Microsoft 365 environment is suitable
  • Which areas may need attention
  • Whether Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus makes sense

No obligation. No technical interrogation. Just a practical discussion about where things stand today.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cyber Essentials?

It’s a UK Government-backed security certification. In plain terms, it shows that a business has the basics in place to stop the most common attacks: firewalls, secure settings, up-to-date software, sensible access controls and malware protection. It’s renewed every year.

Is Cyber Essentials mandatory?

Not for most private businesses. Some UK government contracts require it, and plenty of customers, tenders and insurers ask for it. The best first step is to check exactly what you’ve been asked for, and if the wording is unclear we’re happy to look at it with you.

What are the five Cyber Essentials controls?

Firewalls, secure configuration, security updates, user access control and malware protection. Put simply: your network is protected, your devices and services are set up properly, your software is supported and kept up to date, the right people have the right access, and malicious software can’t run.

How long does Cyber Essentials take?

It depends on how tidy your setup is and how much needs fixing. If everything is supported, managed and up to date, it can move quickly. Old equipment, unmanaged devices or patchy MFA means more work first. After a short readiness review we’ll give you a realistic idea rather than a guess.

How much does Cyber Essentials cost?

There’s an assessment fee set by the scheme, which depends on the size of your organisation, plus the time to review your setup and any fixes that are needed. If something unsupported turns up, replacing it can add cost, and Cyber Essentials Plus means further work. We’ll agree the scope and cost with you before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

How long is certification valid?

Twelve months. You renew every year, and the requirements are updated from time to time, so it’s worth checking your setup against the latest version before you reapply.

What happens if we do not pass first time?

The assessment tells you which answers or controls fall short. You fix those items and resubmit. It’s one reason a readiness review beforehand is worth doing: many delays come from gaps that could have been found and fixed in advance.

Does Cyber Essentials cover remote workers?

Yes. Devices used for your business at home or on the move are in scope by default, whether you own them or your staff do. Home routers are usually out of scope unless you supplied them, which is why a software firewall on each device matters.

Are personally owned devices included?

If someone uses their own phone or laptop to reach company data, then yes, it’s in scope. Devices used only for calls, texts or an authenticator app aren’t. Clear rules about what can and can’t connect make this much easier to manage.

Does Microsoft 365 Business Premium guarantee compliance?

No. It can make identity, access and device controls easier to manage consistently, but Cyber Essentials covers everything in scope, including devices, network equipment and other cloud services. A licence on its own doesn’t tick the boxes.

What is the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?

Cyber Essentials is a verified self-assessment: you confirm your answers about your setup. Plus covers the same five controls and adds independent technical testing, which gives a higher level of assurance. Plus isn’t automatically needed, so start with what your customer, contract or insurer actually asks for.

Can Westlake IT award the certificate?

No. Certificates are awarded by licensed Certification Bodies through the official scheme, which is backed by the NCSC and delivered by IASME. What we do is get you ready: review your scope, fix the gaps and help you give accurate answers. The declaration stays with your organisation.
